The GLW Lifetime Response
What is Lifetime Daily Yield (LTDY)?
Lifetime Daily Yield is the total measure of the entire milk production for each day of the cow’s life.
At GLW Feeds, we use LTDY as an accurate measure of profitability and sustainability at farm level.
Key LTDY Statistics
- UK Average LTDY = 12 litres/day
- GLW Lifetime Response = Up to 25 litres
- UK Housed Herds = 14 litres needed to break even
- Average Added inc Approx = £4,000/cow
What Sustainability Means to GLW Feeds
A combination of increased longevity, reduced carbon footprint and increased efficiency all lead to increased profitability.

How to Achieve a High Lifetime Daily Response
Youngstock
If a heifer calves at 28 months then she needs to complete 2 lactations before she pays back her rearing costs.
- Every 100g of average daily gain in the first two months of life, you can expect approximately 225kg of extra milk in the first lactation.
- Feed a plentiful quantity of quality GLW milk replacer to utilise the 2:1 feed conversion ratio.
- Feeding high intakes of energy-dense and palatable GLW Calf Cudlets to improve rumen development.
- Produces stronger and more robust heifers with well-developed rumens which are heavier when they reach puberty.
- Reduces calving age to 22-24 months and becomes profitable during the second lactation.
- Reduced heifer culling rates and increased herd longevity through increased robustness.
- Reduces the number of replacement heifers on the farm, allowing for more space and increased efficiency footprint.
- Reduced rearing costs and lower farm carbon footprint.
Transition Period
Transition period problems:
70% of metabolic issues in lactating cows are linked to a problem in dry cow management.
Which leads to:
- Fat cows with an increased risk of Ketosis.
- Later peak lactation curves and shorter lactations.
- Cows not reaching genetic potential.
- Longer dry cow periods.
- Higher input costs.
GLW Lifetime Response Solutions:
- Feed a higher MPE diet to result in quality colostrum to give the calf the best start.
- GLW Pre-Calver contains a DCAB mineral pack using our responsible mineral range.
- Inclusion of Choline to reduce the occurrence of fatty liver disease, keeping your cows healthy through their lactation.
- Using precision nutrition to ensure the correct protein energy balance to achieve a healthy cow and calf.
Lactating Cow
The first 60 days in lactation are critical for your cows to reach their genetic potential and peak milk yields. Use precision nutrition to ensure your cows reach their full milk yield potential for longer!
- Discuss extending calving intervals to suit your system.
- Use of feed additives to improve feed efficiencies.
- Formulating Nutri-Opt for balanced energy and protein to improve nutrient efficiencies.
